Art has always been an important part of my life. As a child, I spent hours drawing, painting or creating something. I took art classes throughout high school and college but didn't start to paint seriously until I took my first watercolor class in 1990. I was immediately hooked!
I work in many different art mediums but watercolor is probably my favorite. I love the fluidity of the paint and the variety of effects than can be achieved with it. It is a very challenging medium and each painting takes careful planning since an area can't be covered up with more paint and re-worked as can be done with most other mediums.
Painting on silk is very similar to watercolor but the design must be simplified because each color section is enclosed with a resist to keep the silk dyes where they belong. The dyes spread uncontrollably on the silk which adds to the fun of working with this medium because there can be lots of 'happy accidents'. I started painting on silk in 2006 and love it. It reminds me of stained glass with the separated color sections. I made stained glass windows for 20 years so that may be why I'm attracted to this look.
You'll notice that a majority of my paintings depict flowers. I am an avid gardener and the beauty of flowers make me happy so of course I like to recreate them. I believe that the concepts important to a painting are also important in our visual environment. When I'm designing a planting space, I treat each area as I would a painting. I make each one a composition with a focal point, balance and harmonious color and try to make it so that an observer's eyes move through a planting bed as they would through a painting. The most exciting part of gardening is that the 'painting' changes over the seasons and years.
